Three Maoists killed in two separate encounters
- 13 army personnel injured in blast
KATHMANDU, DEC 19 - At least three Maoist rebels were killed in security forces’ action at two different places of Taplejung district. According to security sources, two rebels were killed in Khamlalung while another was killed in Khamlung village of the district.
Maoist rebels murdered Sami Ulla Khan, former vice-chairman of Bankatti Village Development Committee (VDC) yesterday night.
Thirteen Royal Nepalese Army personnel were injured in a landmine blast near Chapini Bridge of the Mahendra Highway in Hariaun Village Development Committee of Sarlahi district. The injured army personnel, three of whom are said to be in critical condition, have been airlifted to Kathmandu. It is learnt that the arms of some of the army men were also damaged in the blast.
The security personnel belonging to the Karmaiya barrack of the RNA were on a regular patrol when their TATA mobile ran over a Maoist-laid ambush on the center of the black topped road.
A can and a water pot filled with explosives were used in the blast through making a hole from the northern bank of the road. The place is surrounded by sugarcane farm.
Vehicular movement along the highway was stalled one and half-hours.
Reports from Bhairahawa stated that a group of armed Maoists looted Rs. 1.2 million from the Mangalapur branch of Everest Bank in the busy Siddhartha High Way in broad daylight.
Eight rebels including a woman, who came on four motorcycles took control over the bank’s security guard and employees before looting the cash.
According to District Police Office, Rupandehi, two rebels had captured the security guard while they were using metal detectors at the entrance and asked the clients and bank employees to sleep on the floor.Posted on: 2003-12-20 02:11
