Insurgency hampers UNDP programme
SYANGJA, DEC 18 - Insurgency has hampered the Poverty Elimination Programme supported by UNDP in Syangja district, said official sources.
The programme aimed at combating poverty through its strategy of organisation, saving and equipping beneficiaries with various skills, was launched in 1994 and benefited over 18,000 families.
Within three months of the initiation of the project the target areas witnessed facilities of drinking water, bridges and sub-health posts and income generating projects such as poultry farming, cattle rearing and vegetable farming. Other professional training was also provided.
The programme was making good headway and emerging as an exemplary one in South Asia, informed sources. However, increasing insurgent activities have had a negative impact on its momentum, according to Thanapati Neupane, Secretary at the Secretariat of the Local Development Fund.
Started from Arjun Chaupari and Shree Krishna VDCs, the programme had effectively stretched to Daru, Rapakot, Nibuwakhark, Birgha Archale and Dapuk Shimal Bhanjyang VDCs and was to cover 22 backward VDCs.Posted on: 2003-12-19 03:59
