KATHMANDU, DEC 17 - Tuesday shall go down as the dull day for the month with hazy sky, dim sun and predictable chill. Experts were of the view that the day suggested intensification of the things to come.
"Attribute the overcast sky to the cyclone which is building up in the Bay of Bengal. This has dipped the mercury relatively," said Vijay Baidhya, chief at the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
He further said that cyclone emanating in the Bay of Bengal was moving eastwards during the winter affecting South Asian region. Cyclones are violent gosh of air moving in circular motion.
Although there was not a significant fall in temperature, cloudy weather was enough to make people feel the difference. While the minimum temperature came down to 5.5°c, the maximum was at 16.4°c. Chances are mercury will start dipping past the cyclones.
Shedding light on the meteorology of cold, he said that the earth absorbs solar radiation in the form of short waves during the day and emits long waves at the night.
However, relatively shorter and cloudy days arrest the process resulting in frigid temperature. Promising a bright Wednesday, Baidhya claimed that strong western wind would soon cause rain in the western region sooner or later.
Last year had seen temperature dipping remarkably in Terai as fogs had wrapped the region beginning late December through January.
"This is likely to be repeated in some parts of India," said Baidhya, adding "the fogs may cover up the Nepalese Terai by Decebmber 20.
He, however, added that much may depend on the extent the temperature falls down in the interim.Posted on: 2003-12-18 04:23
