Victory Day celebrations at Bangladesh Embassy
KATHMANDU, DEC 17 - The 32nd anniversary of the Victory Day of Bangladesh was celebrated at the Bangladesh Embassy here in Kathmandu today.
On December 16, 1971, the people of Bangladesh achieved victory over the occupation forces after a nine-month long war of liberation.
His Excellency M. Humayun Kabir, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Nepal, commenced the programme by hoisting the national flag of Bangladesh at the embassy premises in the presence of officials of the mission and Bangladeshis living here.
The programme continued in the afternoon with the reading of messages from the President, the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh.
His Excellency the Ambassador, in his speech, paid rich tributes to the freedom fighters and expressed his gratitude to all those who made sacrifices and were involved in the liberation war. He gratefully acknowledged the support and co-operation that the government and the people of Nepal extended during the war of liberation, and expressed hope that, based on common vision for peace and prosperity, both countries could work together to further strengthen mutually beneficial bilateral co-operation in all possible areas.
J.B. Shrestha, President of Nepal-Bangladesh Friendship Association, speaking at the programme said, "Geographically Bangladesh and Nepal may be distant but we are close at hearts, the beat of one heart is heard by the other."
Masud-bin-Momen, Director in the SAARC Secretariat also expressed his views at the occasion.
The programme ended with a cultural programme that included recitation of poems, patriotic songs, dances etc. Bangladeshis living in Nepal, Embassy officials and their family members and distinguished personalities of Nepal were present at the occasion.Posted on: 2003-12-18 04:03
