Killed youth’s family still not compensated

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, DEC 16 - Army is yet to compensate the family members of innocent civilian Rajeev Shrestha, 21, who was killed by an irate soldier at Dhungedhara, Banasthali, on November 6. Additionally, the army has not made public the identification of the soldier and therefore, whether the culprit was penalized, is still an unanswered question.
Rajeev’s uncle Narendra Shrestha said today that no one from the army has contacted the bereaved family. "Initially, we were asked to file our complaint and to answer several question related to the murder. It has been a long time since. From their silence, I do not see any compensation coming," he said.
The uncle was the first relative to reach the spot of the shootout, as he had accompanied Rajeev to a car garage in Banasthali, from where Rajeev took a car with registration number Ba. 1. Ja. 3949 on test-drive. Rajeev was shot minutes later by an unidentified security guard of Army College bus with registration number Ba. 1. Ga. 1172, after his car brushed the bus while Rajeev attempted to take a turn. After shooting him, the soldier allegedly manhandled a friend of Rajeev who was accompanying him in the car.Posted on: 2003-12-17 04:13
