Schoolchildren flee Maoist recruitment

BAJURA, DEC 16 - Many school children from remote Mugu district have fled their homes to some safer places to escape Maoist recruitment of youth and school children as their party cadres.
Some of these children are working as dishwashers in hotels while others are engaged in other manual labour.
Surya Bahadur Shahi, 12 a fifth grader at Shree Lower Secondary School in Dhainakot area of Mugu district is working at a hotel in Kolti airstrip area of Bajura district. "The Maoists abducted my friends. Upon learning that they would also abduct me, I ran out of the house leaving my mother alone," said Shahi.
Like him many children of his age from neighbouring villages have run away from home, according to Shahi.Posted on: 2003-12-17 04:18
