Couples bowling gaining popularity
KATHMANDU, DEC 15 - Some twenty well-heeled couples, predominantly of the 25-35 age range, were present at the state-of-the-art bowling range of Bowling Boulevard to while away the evening in romantic leisure on Sunday during the Couples’ Night bowling competition.
"This is a programme where the couples can relax and enjoy each other’s company rather than being in a serious tournament-type competition," said Anmol Singh, the Events and Marketing Director.
In the romantic competition, two couples were teamed up in each group for the first round of four games. Each game consisted of twenty throws in ten frames. Five top couples then went into the final round to vie for a shopping voucher of Rs. 5,000.
"Bowling is a perfect way to spend what little time we save from work," said Nilendra Mali, 35, who is an established name in the Nepali bowling scene, and was the first runner-up in the national bowling competition.
Nilendra, who is also the finance director at a travel agency, was at the Couples’ Night with his wife Rita. "Bowling may look easy, but let me tell you, it is a very strenuous sport requiring great concentration and physical discipline," said Mali.
Ten-Pin bowling, as it is formally known, is a favourite pastime in the West and is played by all age groups - from those who have barely left toddler-hood to those who walk with the aid of sticks owing to old age. The game consists of knocking down 10 pins from a distance of 60 feet from the foul line by bowling a urethane ball of various weights between 6Ib to 16Ib, as per suitability for the individual player.
The bowler selects a ball, as per age and weight specifications, rolls it down the alley with the intention of knocking down the maximum number of pins in a few tries as possible. The number of fallen pins is the score. If a bowler strikes down all ten pins at a single go, it is known as a ‘strike’.
Raju and Chhamjo Shrestha won the tournament followed by Prabhu Shrestha and Binu Pradhan and Nilendra and Rita Mali. "We wish the happy couple a romantic shopping spree," said Singh.Posted on: 2003-12-16 04:31
