Businessmen leaving homes to avoid Maoist-demand
BARDIYA, DEC 15 - Following the heavy donation by the Maoist rebels, local businessmen of the district are transmigrating themselves to the safer places.
According to the businessmen, the Maoists have asked the donation amounting to Rs 200,000, which beyond the capacity of the businessmen with small trade.
At the moment, all what we can do is to relocate ourselves to the safer places, they said.
"How could we pay them that big demand at a time when the business is hit hard by the lingering violence?" asked they.
Of late, the Maoists have delivered letters to the businessmen of the various places of the district, including Taratal, Basgadhi, and Bhurigaun, asking heavy amount of donation.
According to businessmen of Taratal, where a total of 500 shops are located, the donation of the Maoists range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 2000,000.
"The Maoists send letter first and approach us for the donation. If we fail to meet their demand, they take action against us," said a local businessman, requesting anonymity.
In addition, the Maoists have also demanded the donation with the locals, thereby compelling them to live under the shadow of fear and tension.
The Maoists, on the other hand, have banned selling paddy in various Village Development Committees (VDCs) of the district, where the army is carrying out patrolling. The VDCs include Surya Patuwa, Shivapur, Thohari, and Neaulapur.
However, Mathur Prasad Yadav, Chief District Officer, said that no businessman and local have so far lodged complaint. "If they complain in this matter, it will make the security forces easier to take necessary steps in order to control the Maoist’s donation," he added.
Expressing displeasure over the Yadav’s saying, the locals, who are compelled to pay donation to the Maoists regularly, said that they could not do so as they afraid of the punishment both by the Maoists and the security force.Posted on: 2003-12-16 04:30
