SURKHET, DEC 15 - The number of people leaving their home for India due to the 8-year long series of abduction, murder, violence and terror in mid-west region is going up day by day.
More than a 100 persons a day, the majority being youth, arrive at Birendranagar, Surkhet district headquarters, from Dailekh, Jajarkot, Kalikot and other districts of Karnali zone in order to enter into India for getting some kind of employment due to the threats either from Maoists or the security forces, says local Ram Bahadur Thagunna.
There are only women and elders in most of the villages in the region these days, he said.
‘Although they (Maoists) have issued orders that anyone while travelling from one VDC to another should take their permission and have banned to go to India, we were able to arrive here in some kind of pretension,’ said 14-year old Binod Shahi of Dailekh, Dadamadi, who was studying at class 9 and left the house for India after Maoists forced him to join them.
Likewise, the number of people arriving at the District Administration Offices in the region in order to obtain passports has gone up, it is said.
The number to make passports in the district has doubled this year, said Surkhet CDO, Dharma Raj Dhungana.Posted on: 2003-12-16 04:41
