- Maoists abduct deputy-mayor
KATHMANDU, DEC 15 - Besides killings, incidents of abduction and bombing have been reported from several parts of the country, even as the Maoists make an enquiry on the murder of an elderly man in Taplejung, allegedly by Maoist cadres.
Our reporter from Nuwakot says that security personnel have arrested five locals in connection with an incident where Maoist rebels hurled socket bombs targeting a patrol team in Labdhu area of Khanigaon VDC, this morning. The identities of those arrested have not been revealed.
Reports filed from Syangja state that a group of five to six armed Maoist rebels abducted Mahesh Kumar Kafle, the Deputy-Mayor of Waling municipality from his residence in Waling-8 yesterday night.
Earlier, the Maoists had warned high ranking officials of the District Development Committee (DDC) and the municipality including Kafle to resign from their posts and Kafle was abducted for having defied the Maoist order, it is learnt.
Reports from Dailekh reveal that the Maoist rebels have been taking around Dev Kumari Chand, 21 to various VDCs in a manner meant to humiliate her. Chand who works with DFID, an INGO, had been abducted from her house in Chauratha VDC-3 on November 23.
The rebels have attached pieces of cloth with slogans written on them such as ‘we, the workers of NGOs are informants of the unified command’ and ‘we are against the People’s War’ around Chand’s body. She is being taken around VDCs such as Bhairikali, Thum, Dulllu, Malika, Rakatkot and Bansi.
Meanwhile, a report from Taplejung says that Maoist rebels were making enquiries of the locals of Thinglabu VDC on the murder of elderly Prabhahang Eveng, according to villagers.
On November 9, Maoist rebels had brutally hacked the elderly to death as he failed to provide them a hefty sum as donation. The rebels issued a warning following a release by Krishna Bahadur Mahara, the Maoist spokesperson, stating that the killing of the elderly was against the party policy and the perpetrators of the murder, when found would be liable to a severe punishment.
In yet another incident in Butwal, Maoist rebels set ablaze two vehicles belonging to the Area Forest Office, Butwal. However, no one was hurt in the incident, according to security sources.Posted on: 2003-12-16 04:40
