Irresponsible statement

DEC 15 - This is in response to Damakant Jayshi’s news report titled “Going back only option left with refugees” (Dec 12). It was really disturbing to go through Foreign Secretary Madhu Raman Acharya’s statement that those who are eligible but refuse to go would not be Nepal’s responsibility and such persons would lose refugee status. How dare he make such a shameful and disgusting remark? Is he the sole person in Nepal responsible for shouldering the burden of refugees? How could he undermine the right to return of more than 120 thousand refugees, to their original homeland, with safety, dignity and honour?
How wise is it for refugees to opt to go back before minimum trust is built between them and the Bhutanese government? The statement shows that Acharya is apathetic towards the refugees and wants them to live in complete servility. The refugees have been demanding their right to live in dignity and honor since the beginning of the crisis. The demand is not a fresh one. If Nepal does not have guts to deal with the Bhutanese tyrants and repatriate the refugees with dignity and honor, then why doesn’t it internationalize the issue so that it does not have to bear the burden alone?
Also, in addition, how appropriate was it of Abraham Abraham, UNHCR representative, to make a similar statement? Does that not coerce the choice less people to accept tyranny and live as slaves? Does UNHCR promote slavery around the world?
