School closed for assault on teacher
MANTHALI, RAMECHHAP, DEC 14 - More than 260 students of the Mahalangur Secondary School (MSS) of remote Gumdel village to the north-east of Ramechhap are troubled as the school has remained closed for the past one week. The school was closed as some students physically assaulted one of the teachers on charges of corruption.
Located some 66 kilometres from Manthali, the district headquarters, MSS students had severely beaten Khadga Bahadur Shakya, one of the teachers, accusing him of misappropriating money from the school fund. The villagers carried the injured teacher to Jiri Hospital, a two-day walk from the village, where he is now undergoing treatment.
Following the incident, Kshomasarki Sherpa, the headmaster, accompanied by some other teachers went to Manthali, the district headquarters, after locking the school. This was how the school came to be closed, said a local.
The incident at the school took place when the half-yearly examinations were being held. Even some question papers and answer sheets were destroyed during the incident, according to a teacher. Stating that the school does not maintain a conducive environment, its headmaster Sherpa had requested the District Education Office (DEO) to conduct the ‘Sent Up Test examination at the headquarters itself. However, the DEO has rejected the demand, according to a DEO source.
"I am working towards running the school within two to three days," said Lal Jung Chauhan, the DEO chief.
Two of the ten teachers working at the school are getting their salary from private resources. The same teachers incited the students to manhandle Shakya, as informed by the DEO chief, Shakya.Posted on: 2003-12-15 04:28
