Arrest of teachers and student leaders slammed

BAGLUNG, DEC 14 - Teachers and journalists have condemned the arrest, and demanded the immediate release, of two teachers and two local student leaders taken into custody from a sit-in before the District Education Office (DEO) yesterday.
They have also demanded that the local administration undertake the treatment of a local journalist who was injured in the skirmish between the police and the striking teachers.
The police had picked up teachers, Raju Sharma and Purna Neupane, and student leaders Jagannath Acharya and Narayan Sharma as they were participating in a ‘peaceful’ sit-in in front of the District Education Office yesterday. The students are affiliated to Nepal Free Students’ Union. The injured journalist is Raj Kumar Kandel, a local reporter of the Gorkhapatra daily.
Besides, issuing respective statements here today, different teachers’ organisations and Federation of Nepalese Journalists Dhaulagiri Branch have also announced closure of all the schools in the district on Tuesday in protest of the arrests.Posted on: 2003-12-15 04:41
