Garden-fresh Nepali greens exported to Gulf
KATHMANDU, DEC 13 - Salt Trading Corporation, a government-owned trading company, has started exporting green vegetables to the Gulf from today.
According to Parameshwor Mahaseth, manager of the corporation, the first consignment of 1,000 kilograms parbal, yam and palungo produced in the Kathmandu Valley and the Terai region has been airfreighted to the region by Qatar Airways cargo.
“It is an experimental export. We have a plan to expand it professionally,” Mahaseth told The Kathmandu Post.
He assured that there was no likelihood of the vegetables
going bad during the flight.
“It is just a five-to-six-hour flight.”
A team of the Corporation had surveyed the market in the Gulf and found that there was a high potential of Nepalese green vegetables in this desert region.
“The initial quarantine test has shown that Nepali vegetables are no less hygienic than Indian vegetables already in use in the Gulf region,” said Mahaseth.
He also added that farmers would receive higher prices for their produce if the region were established as a permanent market.
“They got ten per cent more than the local market prices,” Mahaseth disclosed.
The Corporation is also reportedly preparing to launch a special package to motivate farmers towards vegetable farming.Posted on: 2003-12-14 02:31
