Lack of funds paralyses young woman

POST REPORT

SALYAN, DEC 11 - Okhi Bohara, a 35-year-old woman of Simkha in Tribeni Village Development Committee (VDC)- 4, has been living the life of a handicapped for the past 11 years, because of financial difficulties. Her father has looked her since her husband abandoned her after during the early stages of her illness.
Life had become extremely difficult for her and her family after she became paralysed from the waist down. Ruplal, her father, stated that they were unaware of the nature of the disease and initially she had been treated by a witch doctor. When her condition did not improve, she was taken to Ghorahi Hospital from where she was taken to Lucknow in India. Due to the weak economic condition of the family Ruplal had to resort to taking loans amounting to Rs. 100,000 from moneylenders for further treatment.
With this money she underwent treatment and was gradually getting better. However, her treatment stopped when they ran out of money and consequently the lack of further treatment finally crippled her. Paralysed below her waist she requires assistance just to move from one place to another and she has been in this pitiable condition sine she was 24.
Her father Ruplal says, he had to sell even the small piece of land they had to raise money during the initial phases of her treatment. He is troubled by the fact that he has not been of much help to his daughter, but with a family of five to look after, especially in his weak economic circumstances, there is not much he can do. He is worried now as to how he is to support his family.
He says that the VDC chairman had written a letter during 2000/2001 promising him assistance, but nothing came out of it. Even his neighbours have not been able to do anything to help him, he laments.Posted on: 2003-12-12 04:58
