Uterus prolapse: A major problem among women

RSS

SURKHET, DEC 11 - Uterus prolapse has been a major problem among the women in Surkhet district.
‘My uterus prolapsed after giving birth to the first baby-girl, the family drove me out of the house, husband beat up, maternal kins showed hatred, the daughter is very small and I am not in a better condition to work out the living. I don’t know how to live,’ says Padma Nepali of Birendranagar-11.‘I was pregnant for 7 months, intoxicated husband one evening beat up terribly, the result was miscarriage followed by the prolapse of uterus, I remained sterile, husband and in-laws started harassing, exploiting and the ending was my expulsion from the house,’ it is the story of another girl Sangita Magar of Birendranagar-6.These are not the rare cases. Hundreds of women in remote mountainous districts of Surkhet, Dailekh, Jumla, Kalikot, Achham and Dolpa have been suffering from the prolapse.
‘The life of women whose uterus has prolapsed becomes more torturous because of the disgrace and stigma attached with it. The woman becomes the subject of hatred in the society,’ said local Ram Kumar Shahi.According to a study carried out by Digo Jiban, a local NGO, 33 per cent of the women in the area are suffering from the problem.
The main reason of the problem is that the women in the area are used as the working machine and they have to work hard even in the period of pregnancy, said superintendent of Surkhet District Hospital Dr Nhuchhe Man Dangol.
‘Lack of proper diet, physical violence, unsafe delivery etc are the other reasons for the problem,’ he added. The problem of uterus prolapse is a phase-wise complexity, which if treated in time can be cured properly, said Dr Dambar Thapa of the hospital.
The government should bring out effective programmes and organise free health camps in the area for helping settle the problem, said Hari Prasad Sharma of Surkhet Municipality.Posted on: 2003-12-12 05:06
