NHRC urges Maoists to walk peace path

KATHMANDU, DEC 10 - Nain Bahadur Khatri, chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has appealed to the Maoists to lay down arms and resume talks with the government.
Issuing a press statement here today, chairman Khatri has also urged both the government and the Maoists to express their commitment to human rights and protect the entire nation from going to a civil war.
Khatri, on the eve of 55th International Human Rights Day, has asked the civil society, different groups and communities to seek resolution of the current crisis through peaceful means. The violent conflict has caused the death of innocent children, the aged and women besides poverty and unemployment, the statement added.
Meanwhile, Sher Bahadur Deuba, president of the Nepali Congress (Democratic) has also appealed to all to stop the current violence and get united for nation-building.
In a press statement issued here today, Deuba said that every citizen and organisation should express their commitment to the human rights.Posted on: 2003-12-11 04:53
