First Int'l Mountain Day on Dec 11

KATHMANDU, DEC 10 - To mark the First International Mountain Day, to be held on December 11, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation is organising a special function at Birendra International Convention Centre. This was revealed at a joint press meet organised by Society of Environment Journalists and Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation.
An exhibition focussing on mountain development and a review of contributions made by Government and non-Government sectors mainly in the techonolgy, ecology, culture and livelihood of mountain area will provide a holistic picture of the mountain region.
"Giving continuation to developmental objectives of poverty reduction and Environmental Conservation undertaken at the forum of International Mountain Year: 2002, it has become necessary to work for the realisation of sustainable mountain development", said Sarbendra Nath Shukla, Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation.
Shukla further said, "If mountain development is not well looked after, regions including terai belt will be put under negative environmental effects". On being asked on the outcome of developmental activities undertaken during the International Year of the Mountains: 2002, he replied that it is at the seeding stage, but the government was prepared to take it forward seriously and effectively.Posted on: 2003-12-11 04:36
