Govt, Maoists urged to respect human rights
KATHMANDU, DEC 09 - The causes of human rights have been trapped in the crossfire between the army and Maoist rebels, especially heightening the already existing problem on women rights, said officials of All Nepal Women Association (ANWA).
"The government has been leading the country towards militarisation and ignoring the concerns of human rights," said Vidhya Bhandari, president of the Association. She was speaking at a press conference organised here today.
ANWA also accused the government of failing to comply with various international conventions once ratified by the state. Citing the example of a total of 67 children killed in the conflict, Bhandari charged the government of ignoring ANWA’s call for restoration of basic human rights.
"The state has abused the basic right to live by exploiting these rights under the cover of security and maintenance of law and order," said Bhandari. ANWA also claimed that approximately 4,000 women have been directly affected by the ongoing "war" in the country.
In the event of upcoming Human Rights Day, ANWA urged both the state and the rebels to confirm their commitment to human rights through action. ANWA also informed of its plan to celebrate the Human Rights Day in the capital on December 10.
Asked if it was important to organise programmes at the grass-roots level, instead of focusing only in the capital, Bhandari said, "Our party members have extended our former campaigns in villages and we hope the same with this one." Indu
