People who fled to India fearing security action yet to return
BANKE, DEC 09 - Around 400 members from some 100 families in remote Narainapur VDC of Banke district, who had left for India due to atrocity by security personnel three months ago, have not returned yet.
Wards-3, 4 and 5 of the Nepal-India frontier VDC had been a safe haven to Maoist rebels who terrorized the villagers extorting money and grains. In due course, the rebels also abducted three persons of the VDC including its secretary and further intensified their activities.
Three months ago, security personnel visited these wards to counter the Maoist activities. Instead of providing solace to these Maoists victims, they beat up men and women alike demanding information on Maoists. Hence, unable to stand the atrocity meted out by security personnel, they locked their houses and left for Indian cities, according to Maiku Khan of neighbouring Puruwa village.
The Maoists had forcibly distributed their party membership cards to the villagers of those three wards and the security personnel beat them up on the same ground, according to locals of neighbouring villages.
"I had also left for Mohammadpuruwa of India with my family members fearing actions from the security personnel. However, I returned after 18 days," said Khan.
Located across the Raptivi River, these three wards have remained isolated due to absence of a bridge across the river. One has to cover long distance via Indian territory to visit the VDC.Posted on: 2003-12-10 04:00
