Farmers suffer Maoist grain-looting

POST REPORT

NUWAKOT, DEC 08 - Looting of newly harvested grain by the Maoists has become a matter of grave concern for farmers in Nuwakot district. The latest Maoist move in the district has come as another blow to the farmers, already under the burden of the rebels’ extortion drive.‘Maoists have looted huge quantities of newly harvested paddy from over a dozen houses in the past two weeks and the looting continues’, according to security sources.Recently, Maoists looted stored paddy from the house of Sahukanchha in Manakamana VDC-2 in the north Nuwakot and carted away the grain on a truck.
The rebels also looted grain, as well as household goods, from the houses of Shree Krishna Pathak in Thansing area and Hit Bahadur Pyakurel of Bageshwori four days ago, according to local residents.
"Though Maoists claim they looted grain from landlords only, many ordinary and poor farmers have also suffered due to this new Maoist drive.
Farmers are deeply hurt to lose their hard-earned grain," said a teacher of Thansing, requesting anonymity.Posted on: 2003-12-09 04:19
