Muslim woman in social activity despite traditional restraints
UDAYAPUR, DEC 08 - Najbul Khan, a Muslim woman born in a poor family, has shown courage breaking the barriers of religion and tradition to do something for the welfare of the society.
Najbul, 24, lives in Deuri of Triyuga municipality and despite her poor family background is rich in feelings and courage.
An illiterate Najbul was able to read and write after she attended literacy class.
"The family members used to come time and again to look after me whether I went somewhere but I used to pay attention in the literary class run in the evening," she said.
She was very much interested to learn to ride bicycle but her brothers did not permit her to do so saying that it was against the Muslim religion.
"Though my brothers were very rigid in the matter of religion, my father was liberal so I could attend training programme," she said.
She was thrown out of her house when she started to work for the awareness generation programmes.
"I knew about my rights during a training programme in 2055 BS.
"I started to work in the forestation programme in the Udayapur Cement Factory at Jaljale," she said.
"After I started to earn some money, my mother, sisters and younger brother also came to stay with me", she said.
Her brother is studying B.Ed. level in the local campus and her sister is studying in 8th grade in the local school.
She has taken the training of tempo driving in Kathmandu recently and returned to Udayapur with the strong feeling of doing something for the welfare of the women.
"Now, my aim is to work for the welfare of women specially Muslim women and make the Muslim religion forward in accordance with the women’ s interests," she said.Posted on: 2003-12-09 04:21
