RCNP attempting to control wild elephants

POST REPORT

SARLAHI, DEC 08 - After wild elephants from the Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) had crossed into Sarlahi and killed two persons, the authorities at RCNP deputed personnel yesterday to the incident site to lure back the elephants.
It is learnt that the wild elephants’ herd had been damaging crops and property, and terrorising people around this region for the past one month. Despite many requests made to control the elephants, the RCNP had not made any effort until two local residents were killed last Wednesday. After two locals were killed by wild elephants last Wednesday, the local administration had telephoned the RCNP’s office and expressed their deep concern and urged them to immediately take some steps. The RCNP had sent their employees along with a vehicle to control the elephants.According to Shyam Prasad Sharma, the District Forest Officer (DFO), they would be bringing female elephants in order to attract the stray male elephants and relocate them in their habitat inside the park.
