No vehicles ply on road constructed three years ago

TIKA BHATTA

MANTHALI, DEC 07 - No vehicles ply along the road to Dhobi, despite the road having been completed three years ago.
This is a 20-kilometre long road, from Haleday in Tilpung Village Development Committee (VDC) to Dhobi Bazaar in Bijulikot via Nagdaha. As the road is not used by vehicular transport, villagers have started planting crops on this road. It is learnt that villagers had given parts of their agricultural land for the construction of the road in the hope that they would be able to benefit through the commencement of vehicular movement once completed.
Kul Bahadur Khatri a local, contends that they were thrilled by the idea of being able to see and travel by vehicles to other parts of the district on completion of this road, and had contributed some of their land for the same. However, with no vehicles plying on the road even after the completion of the 20-km road, the villagers have instead started growing millet on the road.
Hari Narayan, another local from this region, laments that this road, which was initially thought to be blessing for many has turned out to be a curse for him, as his house lying below this road had been damaged by landslides caused by the road construction.
It is learnt that Duragaon, Saipu, Gothgaon, Bijulikot, Nagdaha, and Tilpung VDCs had provided grant assistance for the construction of this road. A total of Rs. 3.6 million had been spent on this road construction.
After a team, that had gone to inaugurate this road was returned by the Maoists, this road has remained in limbo.
According to Jagannath Dahal, a former member of the District Development Committee (DDC), this road however can be brought into operation after improving the bends and after entrenching the sides of the road with wire.
It is learnt that during the last fiscal year the District Technical Office had conducted some work on this road under the district road programme.
The former chairman of the Nagdaha VDC, Ash Bahadur Tamang contends that this year too they have a plan to carry out some construction work on this road, but the budget allotment is so small that he doubts if the villagers’ desire to travel by a vehicle will be fulfilled.
It is learnt that the DDC has forwarded the plan for further construction of this road under the Road Assistance Programme. The Local Development Officer, Uddhab Timilshina however, says that this plan is yet to be finalized.Posted on: 2003-12-08 04:27
