More Unified Command posts to be set up: Basnet

POST REPORT

BIRATNAGAR, DEC 07 - The Civil Police section, to be included within the Unified Command, has been equipped with modern weapons and warfare skills after the defence policy announced last month to ‘crush Maoists’ came into force, said a senior police officer.
With training from the Royal Nepal Army and the Armed Police Force, and armed with modern weapons, the civil police will be a formidable unit of the Unified Command, informed Krishna Basnet, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), to journalists here today.
28 such command posts have already been established in eastern Nepal alone, revealed the DIG, who added that the government is planning to set up at least one Unified Command post in each election constituency.
The government-announced defence policy of the Unified Command intends to mobilise the Royal Nepal Army, Civil Police and the Armed Police Force together to "sweep away the warring Maoists." The policy has been criticised by political parties and civil society as the beginning of militarisation in Nepal.
With the Unified Command coming into existence, the morale of the civil police, which had suffered heavy casualties in a host of Maoists attacks, has gone high, DIG Basnet added.Posted on: 2003-12-08 04:26
