Doctors’ absence takes pregnant woman’s life

POST REPORT

BAJURA, DEC 04 - A pregnant woman admitted to the Bajura District Hospital with delivery complications died last Friday as there were neither doctors to attend to her nor equipment to deal with her case.
On November 27, Jala Dani, a 17-year-old, was admitted to the district hospital at Martadi after she suffered a week of bleeding.
Unfortunately, there was no doctor to treat her and she died the very next day. Of the two doctors posted to this hospital Dr. Bidyapati Kantha had left for Nepalgunj early morning, while the other had been absent for quite some time.
In the absence of doctors and the fact that the hospital lacked even the basic equipment for surgery, the Auxiliary Health Worker and nurses present there had conducted necessary checks and referred her to some other hospitals as she needed immediate surgery.
However, due to the unavailability of transportation as well as the financial difficulties faced by her family she was taken home instead. She died next day even as preparations were being made to take her home.
It is also learnt that three other pregnant women had died this year alone, as they were not given any treatment at the district hospital. It is understood that the percentage of pregnant women who opt for the four-phase health check-ups during pregnancy in this district is just 0.4.Posted on: 2003-12-03 10:44
