PM brushes aside talks of likely action

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, DEC 03 - Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa brushed off reports that he was in for disciplinary action even as he expressed ignorance about what was happening within the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP).
Thapa was reacting to reporters’ queries directed at him at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) following his arrival from a visit to SAARC nations here today.
"One thing is for sure. I am not taking any action against anyone in the party. As for action against me, I am not aware of it," PM Thapa said.
He is expected to visit Bangladesh and Maldives later this month as part of his second leg of the tour undertaken in connection with the upcoming 12th SAARC summit in Pakistan slated for January 4-6.
Reacting to yet another question on why the Indian PM Atal Behari Vajpayee has suggested an all-party government in Nepal, he said that it was something which "India has been saying for quite sometime and that there was nothing new."
In yet another significant remark on the Nepal-India relationship, PM Thapa said, "What is true is that our ties have never ever been so smooth."
Talking to reporters about the outcome of the visit, Thapa said, " I am satisfied with the outcome of the visit since talks in the respective capitals dwelt on how to consolidate the SAARC process. In fact, India suggested improvement in the quality of the activism."
Thapa further claimed that the talks in Thimpu, Colombo and Islamabad, too, were very productive and were related to identify ways in which the functioning of the regional configuration can be enhanced.
Fielding reporters’ question on the issue of Bhutanese refugee repatriation, PM Thapa said both the sides have expressed satisfaction over the progress made so far even as both the sides were hopeful that the outcome would be implemented "so that a lasting solution is reached."
Thapa said Thimpu urged Nepal to cooperate on WTO related issues even as it expressed willingness to increase Druk Air flights to Kathmandu. He also said that Pakistan was looking forward to King Gyanendra’s visit there on the invitation of the Pakistani President.Posted on: 2003-12-02 10:43
