Virus of crime

DEC 02 - Taking advantage of the escalating Maoist insurgency and its atrocities, many unscrupulous people are on the prowl. Such people are always on the lookout for crime—big or small. Theft, robbery, kidnapping, gang fights and so on have become common. Not that they were aliens before the upsurge in the insurgency, but they have definitely become more regular now. When the Rashtriya Banijya Bank at New Road was looted, people initially thought that it was the work of the Maoists. Soon, it was found to be the work of non-Maoists. The other day a group of dacoits burnt five members of a family in Jhapa, east Nepal (News report: “Dacoits burn alive 5 of a family,” December 01). A couple of months ago, a similar incident of looting was reported. But the brave locals foiled the attack of the robbers. In both cases, the dacoits were Indians. Open border is another main cause of our socio-economic evils. The blanket of security should be spread far and wide, and along the border as well. These are hard times in terms of security. So it is the moral duty of all citizens to cooperate in reversing the deteriorating law and order situation. If one smells something fishy anywhere, they should not ignore it. Alerting security agencies on such matters promptly could go a long way in averting tragedies.
The virus of crime is the most virulent of all. It may contract any of us
any time.
