NFC, branch not to buy local paddy

DIPENDRA BADUWAL

BARDIYA, DEC 02 - Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) Regional Office, Nepalgunj has decided to not buy paddy from farmers this year. The decision would put local farmers at disadvantage.
According to the office, it took such a decision, as it is very difficult to make payment to farmers on time due to the Maoists insurgency that has caused the relocation of banks from the village areas.
"Deteriorating security in the region led us to take such decision. We cannot help it out," said Harihar Shrestha, an official of the NFC, Nepalgunj.
Following the pull out of the NFC the paddy farmers either have to go to the Indian market or Tikapur which itself produces huge quantity of rice. In the past, the NFC used to bail them out by purchasing their production at reasonable rates.
"We used to reach an agreement with the corporation and sell paddy immediately after the harvest," said Bidur Khatri, a local rice trader.
"It is almost impossible to market our production in the major market of Nepalgunj due to the current political turmoil," he added.Posted on: 2003-12-01 11:32
