PALPA, DEC 02 - The Tansen municipality is making preparations to arrange a new landfill site at Dharampani in ward No-12 for dumping of the town’s waste products. It is learnt that Tansen municipality is making an effort in this direction with assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Dharampani has been selected as the landfill site and the construction work is getting underway in compliance with the programme of the Environment and Infrastructure Development (EID).
Everyday 10 tons of waste materials are produced in Tansen, and it is being dumped at a hallowed out land nearby, for the past few years.
The locals of Appu village of Basantapur in Tansen-6 where the wastes are being dumped presently, have raised their voice against the unhygienic and unorganised management of the town’s wastes.

According to Rebant Bahadur Bista, the mayor of Tansen municipality, though there are few houses around this proposed landfill site, they have made provisions to shift them to some other location with requisite amount of compensation, to which the incumbent house owners seemed to be in agreement.
On the proposed land-site, the consultant of the bank has also conducted environmental impact analysis, according to the municipality. Though this waste management programme was to have been implemented in 2001, the existing situation of the country had dissuaded this undertaking.
It is learnt that the proposition for the construction of this dumping-site had also been presented before the concerned Ministry three years ago. With consent from the concerned Ministry, this programme will be implemented from 2004.
The present population of Tansen stands at 30,000 with the annual growth rate of 5 percent. According to the information provided by an engineer of this municipality, Shekhar Kumar Shrestha, upon completion of this landfill site, the problem of waste management at Tansen will be solved for 15 years at the least.Posted on: 2003-12-01 10:47
