Maoist rebels gun down policeman

KATHMANDU, NOV 30 - An armed group of Maoist rebels shot dead a police constable on duty at the bus park in Hetauda, headquarters of Makwanpur district this afternoon. Two civilians were injured in the incident. The deceased has been identified as Surya Bahadur Rai of Khurkot VDC of Sindhuli district. A group of three to four rebels shot Rai in the head and ran way, according to eyewitnesses. Rai died while undergoing treatment at the Hetauda Hospital.
A report from Dailekh said that another armed group of rebels abducted a female employee of an NGO from her house in Chaurantha VDC-3 yesterday. The rebels abducted Devi Kumari Chand, a young girl employed with Woman Hatemalo Programme, an NGO working in Kohalpur of Banke district.
Meanwhile, reports from Siraha said that some downtrodden people harvested standing paddy on over three bighas of land belonging to Bisheshwor Yadav, the Chairman of the District Development Committee (DDC), in Karjanda Kalawanjar VDC, on the orders of Maoists on Wednesday.
The people took the paddy to their houses. However, the paddy was not fully ripe for consumption, according to sources at area police office, Mirchaiya.
Same people had planted paddy on the land last year. Police also said that poor people had planted paddy on some 50 bighas of land in the district under Maoists’ direction and that measures have been adapted to stop further harvests of paddy under Maoists’ supervision.
In yet another report from Myagdi, Maoists forcefully evicted the family members of Jaya Ram Baruwal, a Rastrya Prajatantra Party activist, from their house in Shikh VDC-7, recently. The rebels locked Baruwal’s house and the family members were forced to travel to Beni, the district headquarters, as stated by the victims.Posted on: 2003-11-29 11:10
