Rizal pins hope on JVT meet
KATHMANDU, NOV 30 - The Nepal-Bhutan Joint Verification Team (JVT) is going to meet from Monday in Damak, Jhapa, with an aim to finalise the verification process of the refugees who belong to category 3, non-Bhutanese.
The meeting is expected to finalise the verification of 2,948 people of 817 families who fall under this category. The categorisation follows the agreement arrived at the 15th ministerial meeting held in Thimphu to review the categorisation. The refugees who have been kept under this category had expressed their dissatisfaction over the categorisation report.
Meanwhile, Bhutanese human rights leader Teknath Rizal expressed hopes that the JVT would make landmark decision in favour of the voiceless refugees. "The refugees who fell under the category of non-Bhutanese and criminals (category-4) are yet to get justice," he said.
Talking to The Sunday Post on the upcoming JVT meeting, Rizal said, "The 15th round of ministerial level talks has opened the way for the refugees to return to their home country." He suggested the refugees to return home at all cost. "The struggle for justice and equality can be carried out after safe return to home," he said. "The monitoring of the international community will play a crucial role after the repatriation."Posted on: 2003-11-29 10:23
