Shortage of citizenship cards trouble locals
SINDHUPALCHOK, NOV 29 - Around 700 residents who came to Lamosanghu camp from around one and half dozen VDCs to acquire citizenship cards had to return empty-handed yesterday as the camp ran out of the citizenship cards. This was a big disappointment for the villagers who had come to get their citizenship cards, according to sources.
The camp is being organised since November 23, 2003 as part of the government’s campaign to provide residents of the remote areas with citizenship cards in their vicinity. A total of 4,300 citizenship cards have been distributed as of yet, according to sources.
“The District Administration Office (DAO) had informed the Ministry of Home to supply the camp with some 5,000 cards. The Ministry said that it could make provision of only 1,000 cards, but the cards are yet to reach,” said Nil Prasad Bhandari, chairman of the District Development Committee.
“The problem surfaced as demand for the cards soared beyond expectations. The Ministry has informed us that it would dispatch the cards as early as possible,” said Rudra Nath Basyal, the Chief District Officer (CDO).
However, the villagers who came to the camp covering a long distance were disappointed, as they could not get citizenship cards even after a long wait. “I could not get a citizenship card even after waiting for the entire day,” said Sun Maya Tamang, 46, of Thulopakhar VDC.
The camp will be held till tomorrow and its employee’s estimate that over 2,000 citizenship cards are required to meet the local demand.
CDO Basyal said that deserving citizens would be provided with the cards by all means. The duration of the camp may even be extended for the purpose. Posted on: 2003-11-28 11:20
