AI appeals against ASI’s detention, torture
KATHMANDU, NOV 28 - Amnesty International (AI) has appealed to the Prime Minister and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure the safety of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Raj Man Ghole, who has been reportedly detained at Police Headquarters, Naxal here.
Issuing a press statement, AI today said that ASI Ghole was subjected to torture and ill-treatment by two inspectors at the Central Special Task Force Base Camp, Samakhusi on October 3 and he had reportedly received death threats.
AI has urged IGP Shyam Bhakta Thapa and PM Surya Bahadur Thapa for an impartial and independent investigation into the allegations of torture by the two inspectors. The perpetrators should be brought to justice, the statement added.
It has also said that Ghole should be allowed immediate access to his lawyers, family members and any medical treatment he requires.
"He should be immediately released and the due legal process should be continued," the statement said.
Ghole, who has been detained on the charge of causing drunken disturbance, was reportedly severely thrashed by the two inspectors.Posted on: 2003-11-27 10:30
