Pashmina export
NOV 27 - It is very disappointing to know that India is creating another hurdle by imposing 16 per cent duty on Nepal’s pashmina export to India. The latest Indian blockade against Nepal’s one of the top exportable commodities, however, does not come as a surprise to me. Despite being one of the emerging economic powers of the world with its ever-expanding market, India has been always rude to quality Nepali products. Take vegetable ghee, beer, among others, for instance. Both of these products were put to a series of unwanted and unnecessary barriers before they finally penetrated the Indian market. The other commodity facing a similar barrier to get into the Indian market is Nepali drugs.
Despite being aware of the fact that pharmaceutical products have very limited “life-span”, the Indian side are always reluctant to understand as they take almost nine months to certify Nepali drugs as per their standards. By coming with these new barriers, whether it is related with tariff or non-tariff, India has always ignored preferential trade treaty that it had signed with Nepal.
