BANKE, DEC 26 - Finding no other reliable sources to rely upon for their livelihood, Badi women continue to take up flesh trade in Banke.

Several efforts by governmental and non-governmental organisations seem to have yielded no results, as many Badi women are into flesh trade, one of their “ancestral” professions.

Flesh trade is the only occupation I could find to solve my hand-to-mouth problem, says a Badi woman of Rajhena-6, talking to Rastriya Samachar Samiti on condition that her name will be kept secret.

The death of her husband some six years ago changed her life, the mother of five children. “With the untimely death of my husband, I became the sole breadwinner in my family,” she says.

“I went through many options to feed my kids. But no profession other than flesh trade helped me,” says the 35-year-old woman.

She is not alone. Some other Badi women are also working as commercial sex workers in Nepalgunj and Kohalpur. Her two daughters (one 14-year-old and the other 16-year-old) are walking in their mother’s footsteps.

Grinding poverty is compelling many women of the Badi community here to adopt flesh trade to eke out a living.

Badi women say they would give up flesh trade given that they were provided with alternative opportunities to earn for living.
