Doctors urged to hear out patients for better treatment
CHITWAN, NOV 26 - Problems in eliminating maladies and illness occur as a result of the poor communication between doctors and their patients. According to American Professors, failure by doctors to attentively listen to their patients is a pivotal factor in medical problems, and have suggested that doctors need to dedicate more time to individual patients if the problem is to be ameliorated to a great extent.
Speaking at a seminar in Chitwan on Tuesday, American professors present there provided their invaluable opinions, suggesting that doctors be more close to their patients and maintain a cordial relationship with them by listening to their problems.
Expressing his view at the seminar, Professor Jeffrey Cotler of California State University said that the patients do not go to a doctor without any ailment, and the elimination of the malady becomes easier if the respective doctors listen to their patients attentively and with due respect.
Doctors in any country, due to their busy schedules and engagements, prefer not to devote much of their time to their patients, but the time period or number of sittings would be cut down if they listened to their patients with much care, Cotler iterated.
Another American professor opined that by maintaining a rapport and intimacy with the patients, more valuable information could be gleaned from patients.
Dr. Kiran Regmi, chief of the Gynaecological Department at the Bharatpur hospital sharing her experiences conceded that the attitude of more than 50 percent of local doctors towards their patients was nonchalant and careless. "Doctors need to treat their patients with more intimacy for better results", Dr. Regmi added.
Organised by the Gyaenocology Department of the Bharatpur Hospital, the seminar was attended by about 60 health workers from the various hospitals of Chitwan.Posted on: 2003-11-25 09:37
