Maoists stall vehicular movement

KATHMANDU, NOV 25 - Hundreds of passengers are stranded as buses plying along the Bharatpur-Madi section of the Mahendra Highway were stalled on Sunday due to Maoist threats. Dozen buses ply along this route everyday, which have now come to a virtual halt for an indefinite period. Maoists issued threats on charges of ferrying security personnel along this route, according to sources.
"The Maoists have threatened to chop off our hands and legs if we continue to operate our vehicles along the route," said a vehicle entrepreneur. "We are not sure when service will resume along this route."
Reports from Nuwakot said that Maoists looted Rs. 50,000 in cash and a large quantity of fresh harvested paddy from the house of Binda Sitaula of Sundaradevi VDC-2 yesterday. The Maoists drove away two women who were attending Binda Sitaula, the ill house owner and carried out the looting. The rebels earlier had demanded cash from her, according to the victim.
A group of 25 rebels carried out looting, according to Sitaula who stated that some of the rebels were from around the village itself.
Meanwhile, our reports from Siraha said that a group of Maoists abducted Laxmi Yadav, the outgoing Secretary of the Bhawanipur Kalabanjar VDC this afternoon, according to family sources.Posted on: 2003-11-24 09:23
