Rebels herd off sheep from government farm
JUMLA, NOV 25 - Maoist rebels captured 258 sheep and goats from a government-owned Sheep and Goat Farm located about 25 km east of here, the district headquarters, on Friday afternoon.
Junior Technical Assistant Hari Bhakta Kathayet said that around 200 armed-rebels herded the animals off from the regional research centre. Besides stealing clothes from the farm, the rebels also drove off 39 hares, two horses and one donkey.
Established by the government, with technical assistance from United Nations Development Programme about 33 years ago, the farm supplies cross-breeds of sheep and goats to the farmers in the Karnali region, which has a climate suitable for their growth.
Kathayet said the rebels had threatened to kill them if they resisted. There were only 11 people, including shepherds, when the rebels raided the farm and drove all animals along with them.Posted on: 2003-11-24 09:25
