Shocking statistics

NOV 25 - I was shocked to read the alarming suicide toll in Nepal. The number of people who killed themselves in the last five years (daily average of 6.72) outnumber those who were killed in the armed Maoist conflict. Poverty, unemployment, rapid urbanisation are some of the causes of suicide. But that does not allow sympathy for those who commit suicide. Humans have no control over life, and those who try to end it themselves are the biggest sinners. There are millions of Nepalis who are going through different forms of deprivations but it takes courage to live.
A modern democratic state is also a welfare state. By providing employment opportunities, developing social sectors, and conveying the message of love and care, the state—I mean the concerted efforts of the government, political parties and civil society—such self inflicted crimes can be averted.
