Digvijay Singh bags title
KATHMANDU, NOV 24 - Digvijay Singh rode on consistency to win Nepal’s premier golf tournament, the Rs. 1.6 million Surya Nepal Masters, at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort today.Singh, who had arrived here after a tiresome journey from USA where he played World Cup of Golf, ended the concluding day with the score of four-under par 68 to add to his previous day’s four-under 68 and opening day’s three-under 69. He was four shots clear of runners-up Rafiq Ali and Gaurav Ghei and pocketed the winner’s cheque of Rs. 259,200."I could have performed better if I hadn’t made stupid mistakes," said a smiling Singh after receiving the beautiful trophy. "But I am happy that I won the tournament in this beautiful ground." Singh had an average performance until 11th hole but got a double bogey on it. But after that he got a birdie on 12th and three consecutive ones after 15th to win the tournament he has been playing for the last three years.Overnight leader Ali made a bogey on the 17th hole to share the second place with Ghei finishing seven-under 209. Ghei, who partnered Singh in World Cup, shot a three-under 69 on the final day.
Last year’s champion Uttam Singh Mundy could only finish on fourth place despite having a great start in the competition. He shot five-under 211 while C Muniyappa and Rahul Ganapathy were tied for fifth with 112.Local hero Deepak Acharya finished tenth with one-under 215 having a good day for two-under 70. Acharya made birdies on third, ninth and 12th hole and a bogey on seventh. He could have finished better if he hadn’t played four-over 76 on the second day.Minister for Information and Communication Kamal Thapa presented the prizes to the winners amidst a ceremony. Champion Singh dedicated his victory to Bhim Sain Jain, the secretary of his homeclub in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh who was recently murdered.
"This is one of my favourite ground, and I feel very positive while playing here," 30-year-old Singh told The Kathmandu Post. "I was very confident about good performance."
