75 agitators detained

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, DEC 15 - The police on Tuesday detained at least 75 agitating representatives from indigenous peoples’ organisations and Constituent Assembly (CA) members from the communities and released them after an hour.

The agitators were organising a sit-in programme at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu under the banner of Adibasi Janajati Brihat Morcha Nepal, putting forth a number of demands including to establish a special mechanism in the CA to address the issues of indigenous peoples in the new constitution.

According to secretary of the Morch Krishna Bahadur Bhattachan, they organised a corner meet inside the Mahendra police Club and demanded the government implement the International Labour Organization’s Convention 169 as soon as possible. Bhattachan also said that the Morcha, a coalition of 105 indigenous peoples’ organisations and ethnic political parties, has been organising various kinds of programmes to pressurise the government.
