Locals happy to have new footpath

POST REPORT

KOTDARBAR, TANAHUN, NOV 20 - The people of the remote Maoists-affected region of this district are immensely happy these days. The reason for their happiness is that a newly built road has made it convenient to travel to the district headquarters.
According to the locals, before the construction of this narrow road, known as Dharampani-Kotdarbar road, they had to walk a whole day to reach the district headquarters. It is now possible to reach the district headquarters, along this road, within just three hours.
Man Bahadur Pasrangi, a local resident says that the completion of this road has made it easier for the locals to take their farm products, particularly, fruits and vegetables, to the markets in district headquarters and other main towns along this route for sale.
It is learnt that the construction of this 1.5 metre wide road, which was started under the Work for Food Programme, before the Dashain festival, extends to a length of 3470 metres. Though this road is small, it has drastically cut down travel time as well as expenses, says Hariprasad Sapkota, the community coordinator of the programme.
It is learnt that the local villagers were involved in the labour of the entire road, for which they were provided with food materials, mainly rice-grain, instead of money as this region was more hit by scarcity of food, informed the Construction Consumer Committee formed for this purpose.
According to Padam Bahadur Ale, the chairman of this committee, the local workers seemed happier to obtain rice-grain for their work input on this road. The locals worked at the construction site from eight in the morning to eight in the evening, for which they received eight kilograms of rice-grain.
According to information provided by the above consumer committee, a total of 1516 locals had taken part in digging of this road. These workers have already been provided 9021 Kg of Mansuli rice-grain equivalent to Rs. 142992, stated Sapkota.Posted on: 2003-11-19 09:02
