Karuwa industry in the doldrums
BHOJPUR, NOV 19 - The famous Karuwa, a brass water jug industry is in crisis due to the lack of raw materials and market.
The industry was in crisis for long time due to the lack of electricity supply and market and now the supply of coal is totally stopped and the future of Karuwa industry is in a difficult situation. There are about two dozen Karuwa and metal industries at Taxar bazaar in Bhojpur district.
According to Ramesh Shakya of Taxar VDC, there is no coal to melt the metal and they have to work with other alternative method and use slag of the wood.
" If we do not get coal then all the Karuwa industries will be closed down,’’ he said. Our work is totally stopped due to the lack of coal, he said.
There used to be the supply of coal, for nine months a year but this year coal was not supplied even for three months.
The community forests stopped to provide coal therefore there is the scarcity of coal, chairman of Ajima Multi Purpose Co-operatives Bharat Tamrakar said. Coal industry encouraged the deforestation and there was dispute of price of the coal, he said. There used to be the work until midnight but now people stop to work after 12 in the noon, elderly Gyan Bahadur Shakya said . There were so many Karuwa industries in our time, coal was available in abundance, he said. There were over 200 industries but now the number has gone down to about a dozen, he noted.
Our employment is in stake due to the lack of electricity supply and coal, Shakya lamented. We are waiting for the supply of coal, another Karuwa entrepreneur Ramesh Shakya said. If it continues like this then we will close down the Karuwa industry and find out alternative , Mohan Raj Shakya said.
The Bhojpuri Karuwa used to be supplied to Darjeeling, Sikkim, Assam of India, however the supply of Bhojpuri Karuwa is limited only in Bhojpur bazaar at present. If attention is not paid about the supply of coal and distribution of electricity the Karuwa industry will be closed, they said.Posted on: 2003-11-18 09:38
