Kathmandu vulnerable to earthquake, say experts
KATHMANDU, NOV 18 - Alleging that the government is in a severely feeble state, Keshav Sthapit, Mayor of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) said he could have anything from the government as demanded.
Stating that he has had all his demands fulfilled by the government he said, "This is not an outcome of goodwill but merely a manifestation of the weaknesses of a handicapped government."
He said since the government had no future itself, he too was a guest for few days. He also claimed that his resignation would drive the government to a quitting stage as well.
He was speaking at a programme on "Minimisation of Disasters in Asia and Latin America" organised by the Kathmandu Metropolitan Cityin association with UNESCO.
At the programme, experts were of the opinion that the valley was critically vulnerable to earthquakes. However, Sthapit urged them not to terrify the people with such claims.
Officials at the KMC had presented recommendations regarding the construction of physical infrastructures in the capital, which would help minimise the effects of disasters such as earthquakes. Disaster expert at the UNESCO advised the need of awareness programmes regarding earthquakes and their dangers. "Earthquake is a serious issue for the Kathmandu Valley and everybody should know about it."
Experts said that cities like Kathmandu with old structures, narrow roads and overwhelmingly occupied riverbanks were particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.Posted on: 2003-11-17 09:07
