Concerns raised over Mid-Marsyangdi dispute
KATHMANDU, NOV 17 - Expressing concern over the major civil works contractor’s unilateral termination of the 70-megawatt Middle Marsyangdi Hydroelectric Project contract, a group of politicians and intellectuals have demanded an investigation into the matter.
The project’s civil works contractor Dywidag-Dragados-CWE JV (DDC JV) terminated the contract with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), citing ‘violation of contractual obligations’ as the reason.
In a statement, signed by the former deputy Prime Minister Ram Chandra Poudel among others, the group said that the current crisis at the project has put further stress on the minds of Nepali people, who are frustrated by the cancellation of the Arun III project.
The group, demanding an independent probe into the case, has asked the government to make public the finding and mete out punishment to those responsible. It has also asked the government to take necessary measures to resume the works of the country’s biggest hydropower project under construction.
The project, originally scheduled for completion by December 2004, has already been delayed by 20 months owing to the country’s deteriorating security situation, largely triggered by the Maoist insurgency.Posted on: 2003-11-16 09:10
