Maoists continue looting, property confiscation and bombings
KATHMANDU, NOV 16 - Besides claiming many lives, other Maoist incidents such as bombing, looting, restriction on movement and land-mine blasts have been reported today from several parts of the country.
A report filed from Saptari said that a large group of armed Maoists locked the house of Mrigendra Kumar Singh Yadav, the ex-State Minister for Water Resources and also Central Deputy-Chairman of Nepal Sadbhawana Party. The Maoists also declared Yadav’s entire property in the district to have been wrested under their control in a notice pasted on the wall of the house.
Of the 150 rebels, some took the members of the house and its servants under control and plundered cash and valuables worth Rs.300,000. They chanted anti-government slogans before leaving the site, according to eyewitnesses.
Our reporter from Butwal said that twelve security personnel were hurt, four seriously when a vehicle escorting them was blown up by a land mine laid by Maoists in Saljhundi area of Rupandehi district early this evening.
Two vehicles were ferrying the security personnel towards Chandrauta area of Kapilvastu. However, another vehicle escaped without mishap. The injured are undergoing treatment in the Lumbini Zonal Hospital, according to a security source.
Reports from Dhangadhi said that at least six security personnel were hurt in a clash with Maoist rebels in the Khirachadhi area, west of Chainpur, the headquarters of Bajhang district today. The security unit had clashed with the Maoists in the area since two p.m. in the afternoon, which lasted till six p.m. The Maoists fled the scene after firing by additional security force personnel from choppers that reached the site from Nepalgunj and Doti. Losses on the part of the rebels could not be ascertained, said security sources.
Reports filed from Taplejung say that Maoist rebels looted Rs. 70,000 from a group of Australian tourists at the Mamakhe base camp. The Australian team had left from Kanchanjanga base camp and it was stopped and looted by Maoists wielding various weapons, according to a source.
Our report from Bhojpur said that Maoists have asked an elderly couple to leave their house, even as they announced Maoist control over the house and their land.
Pasting a notice, the rebels asked Padam Bahadur Rai, 84 and his elderly wife Ganga Maya Rai to quit the house at the earliest. "We are very sad to have been forced to leave our house at the last stages of our lives," lamented the elderly couple. Their son is the headmaster of Arun Secondary School in Dingla.
Meanwhile, Nepal National Teachers Organisation, Bhojpur has issued a release appealing to the Maoists to retract the move towards the elderly couple.
A report from Hetauda states that the Maoists have restricted movement of the public to around a dozen VDCs in west Makwanpur declaring the area to be their base zone. The Chepang community people dominate the remote area.
A report from Bardiya said that Maoists detonated a powerful bomb in the District Development Committee (DDC) building in Gulariya, the district headquarters, yesterday night.
