Gurung downs rookie Sonam
KATHMANDU, NOV 15 - Sano Gurung broke Dawa Sonam Sherpa’s service five times to win 6-3, 7-5 in men’s singles category of the Second Jaikar Memorial Open Tennis Tournament organised by Man-Jaikar Tennis Academy today.
In the crucial second set, Gurung broke Sherpa’s serve in the 11th game when the score was tied at 5-5 and comfortably won the match advancing into the second round. Other 17 men’s singles matches were played on the day.
“Though Sonam is young, he played brilliantly and gave a tough time to me,” said Gurung after the match. Gurung and Sherpa traded break of serves in the first set, with Gurung breaking four times and Sherpa breaking thrice, but Gurung prevailed 6-3. Sherpa bounced back in the second set and tried his best to take the match into the third set. Young Sherpa lost his rhythm from the ninth game of the second set and ultimately lost the hard-fought match.
Two veteran’s singles matches were also held on Friday. In the first veteran’s singles Silash Gomes beat Sonam Sherpa Lama 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets. Sonam Sherpa who arrived late from Pokhara failed to handle the powerful serves of lanky Gomes. The junior category of the tournament will start from Saturday at Satdobato Tennis Complex.
Apart from the match between Man Bahadur Katuwal and Chewang Lama all the matches were one-way traffic on Friday.
