Gyan Bahadur betters national record
KATHMANDU, NOV 13 - Gyan Bahadur Shrestha of Royal Nepal Army’s Tribhuvan Club (TC) broke his own national record in the Valleywide Open Women’s and Men’s Weightlifting Championship held at the Dashrath Stadium
today.
Shrestha, whose previous best was 233kg in 85kg category, lifted a total of 235.5 kg in clean and jerk while achieving the landmark. "It is very exciting and I enjoyed the moment," the weightlifter told The Kathmandu Post. "However I have already lifted 240kg in training session, I am planning to increase my record step by step in the future," ecstatic Shrestha added. His fellow club mate Buddhi Lama and MPC Hira Bahadur Thapa were placed second and third in the category.
Likewise, in women’s competition, Tara Pun cleared 120kg clean and jerk to claim the top spot in the 69kg category. Pramila Shrestha lifted 92.5 in clean and jerk of 63kg category leaving behind Uttam Khattri and Sanu Gurung respectively at second and third position.
Sarada Karki clinched the first position of the 48kg category lifting 60 kg total while Raj Laxmi Thapa accumulated 45 in clean and 62.5 jerk to come first with total weight of 107.5 kg. Niti Shrestha, Bhanta Katuwal and Monika Rai were placed first, second and third respectively in 53 kg while Kamala Lama and Maya Sherpa, first Nepali woman to scale Mount Ama Dablam, performed an exhibition lifting.
