Seven rebels killed, seven cops injured in booby trap
KATHMANDU, NOV 13 - At least seven Maoist rebels were killed during an encounter with security forces in Taplejung’s Sanwa and Yamfidin Village Development Committees over the weekend, according to reports. The security forces recovered some socket bombs and communication equipment from the clash sites.
Meanwhile, in Syangja, seven policemen were injured today when Maoist rebels exploded a booby trap in Chhang Chhangdi area.
The policemen had gone to the area to investigate a road accident in which a truck had collided with a tractor. Police said they exchanged fire for about half an hour before the rebels retreated after an army helicopter from Pokhara flew in and began aerial shooting against them. All the policemen are out of danger.
Meanwhile, in Taplejung, Maoist rebels hacked 79-year-old Prabahang Kedem of Thinglabu VDC to death for his refusal to give them donation on Sunday. The rebels also abducted his nephew Dal Bahadur after his murder. Locals, however, said they could not interfere for fear of their lives. The rebels had demanded a huge amount of money that was beyond his financial capacity.
A report from Panchthar said that 17-year-old Dhruba Rai who was abducted together with her father Sukra Raj Rai about two weeks ago had somehow managed to escape from Maoist captivity and arrived at her home, according to her relatives.
She and her 52-year-old father, a retired Indian-Gorkha serviceman, were arrested by the rebels from their home at Chyangthapu VDC-4. The rebels killed her father a week ago after he refused to provide them combat training.
Another report from Bhojpur said that Maoist rebels, through a public notice, have warned that they would kill five people in Khotang district wherever they are found unless they publicly apologise within 30 days, for passing information to security forces about their activities.
The notice has been issued in the name of Tanka Prasad Acharya of Diktel, Madan Deuja and Shant Gurung of Chyandanda, Ratna Rai of Buipa and Chandra Rai of Yamkha village. All of them have been accused of spying on Maoist activities. The notice signed by Khotang district secretary Hiranya, however, made no specific charges against them except for accusing them of being surakis or informers.
Meanwhile, a report from Nepalgunj said that whereabouts of Mugu district committee member of the CPN-UML Dhirendra Malla is still unknown since he was abducted by the Maoists two months ago. Malla was abducted from Bajura’s Badubgad while coming to Nepalgunj from Mugu.Posted on: 2003-11-12 08:29
